1.Why should I choose Xiamen University? 3.What should I do if I can’t speak Chinese? We open Chinese language programs of different levels. At the beginning of every semester, there will be a placement test. According to results of the test, we put new students into classes of different levels. Every semester, there are more than 100 new students, who know nothing about Chinese language before they come, studying in Xiamen University and they are now getting on very well with their study life here.

5.When can I start my course?
OEC Chinese language programs of the University enrol new students for spring semester, summer short-term semester, fall semester and other short-term programs. academic calendar as follows: Autumn semester: mid-September to end of January the next year Winter vacation: end of January to mid-February Spring semester: mid-February to end of July Summer vacation: end of July to beginning of September Summer short-terms: May 8th to June–23th, mid-July to mid-August Teaching hours: (Monday to Friday):
- 8:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
- 13:00 a.m. - 14:30 p.m.
- 14:40 p.m. - 16:10 p.m.
6. About accommodation, why are the prices of the 3-8 floors and 9-10 floors different? Reasons:
In the 9-10 floors, the rents include electricity and water fees.
In the 9-10 floors, guests can get a better view over the sea.
The 9-10 floors are usually for non-student guests.
7. If I want to study for short periods(< a long semester) other than May-to-August summer short term, can I join the long-term program and then quit halfway? Yes, but if you join in the long-term program in the middle of the term, you should already know some Chinese so that you can catch up with other students ,who study Chinese from the beginning of the term.
8. What is different between Nanguang Building and Cai Qingjie Building? Almost the same regarding domestic facilities, Cai Qingjie Building is more like a hotel offering food, washing service, regular room cleaning, lift etc.. Nan Guang is a dormitory building with no waitress or lift. Besides, the reception desk of the two buildings are located in Cai Qing Jie Building.
9. How about internet? Can I bring my laptop then Do you have any hotspot or must I use internet bar in university? Is there far from dorm? The university LAN is available in overseas students’ dormitory. Students who need the Internet service in dorm can go to Cernet Brand-band Section of XMU Internet Center with their student cards and passports. It will take around 7 days before you can use the LAN. Address: XMU Internet Center, 1st floor, Jiageng Building No. 3; Tel: 2181596; Price: 35RMB/month. There is also a internet bar on campus in Jia Geng 5, about 5 minutes away. You can also have free wireless Internet access in the libruary or Jia Geng 3 building.
10. When and where can I take HSK Test(Chinese Proficiency Test)? 11. Is it possible for you to help me estimate my total expenses for one semester? I will be shouldering all the expenses on my own. Here are my answers:
- tuition fee- 8000RMB
- enrolment fee- 400RMB
- dorm rents- about 30 yuan per day, about 3600-4000RMB per semester
- meal expense- about 15-20 RMB per day for three meals a day in the school cafeterias, about 2000RMB- 3000RMB
- textbook fees- about 300 RMB
- insurance premium- 600RMB
Total necessary expense: about 16000 RMB There might be some other expenses, but they will not be much.
12. If I want to live outside the campus, is there any place where most overseas students live? There are two buildings near the capus where many overseas students live, Da Xue Cheng Building and Heng Da Building. You can rent a single room in the two buildings or any place near Xiamen University after going through some necessary procedures.
