Ed Horvath 2013 Exhibition at Stable Art Gallery in Ridgewood

"My paintings make a statement," said  Ed Horvath, who has an exhibition this month at the Stable Art Gallery in Ridgewood. Included are 34 still life and landscape oil paintings, as well as "slice of life" works.

"We walk past these people all the time," he said. "I wanted to show she is not invisible."Ed Horvath Oil Painting

"The Laborers" shows three day workers waiting for work. They are in the shadows at the Home Depot in Passaic, outside Botany Mills. "The Student" is a painting of Horvath’s daughter observing an exhibit at the Morgan Library on Madison Avenue in New York City. "The Waiter" was inspired by a little walk-in restaurant in Bergenfield. This painting won The American Post Card Award at the 30th Regional Juried Show at the Ridgewood Art Institute. Other awards include the 12th Annual St. Catherine Patron of the Arts Show 2011 for oil painting. (Ed Horvath 2013 Exhibition at Stable Art Gallery in Ridgewood)

"My oil painting allows me the freedom of expression to lose myself and decompress. It’s an escape for me not having a deadline every day," Horvath revealed. He is currently a freelance graphic designer, but he has worked for companies and ad agencies as an art director and illustrator. "In business it is all deadlines driven," he explained.

Portrait work is also featured in this, his first solo exhibit. There are three paintings featuring ballerinas – all painted from live model classes at the Ridgewood Art Institute.

He is showing several still life oil paintings. "I like to set still life up myself and paint in the north light studio at the Barn," he noted. "A Wine Bottle," "Watering Can," "Teapot," "Radishes," "Pumpkins" and lots of garden flowers are on display.

Landscapes are painted plein air at Ringwood Manor and Skylands Botanical Gardens. On exhibit are several winter scenes. In painting outside in winter he uses a thicker linseed oil, sets up his easel in the snow, brings some hand warmers and says it’s the same as painting other times of year.

"It’s great being outside in winter painting. I feel the cold conditions are reflected in the values of the paint colors," Horvath said. He paints in John Osborne’s plein air painting class which runs for two hours. The paintings are then finished in the studio at the Ridgewood Art Institute. "Fallen Tree" reflects the weather conditions we have recently experienced. His spring landscape paintings feature native flowers – azaleas and forsythias.

"Potting Shed" was painted at an estate in Basking Ridge at a Revolutionary historical site. Once a year there is a reenactment and artists are invited to paint on the grounds. Paintings of Long Beach Island, a lighthouse at St. George’s Reef and even a surfer are all part of the exhibit. "The Pond" at Ringwood shows early fall with frost on the pond.

Horvath studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. In deciding to go back to oil painting he thought of the medium as "using the entire orchestra." He feels that painting is a way to share inspiration with other people as well as an outlet to get away.

Love of art seems to run in Horvath’s family with one daughter being a graphic designer, while the other is an art education major.

The exhibit can be seen at the Stable Art Gallery at 259 N. Maple Ave. in Ridgewood. Hours are weekdays 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or by appointment. Call 201-670-5560.
